  • Description: In 1998, Tom Van Hoose, the leading authority on the Gibson Super 400, commissioned Roger Borys (apprentice to Jimmy D'Aquisto for five years) to build an homage to the Stromberg Master 400 as a pure acoustic instrument. Roger did so using Eastern hard maple and Adirondack spruce, and with Macassar ebony fretboard, bridge, finger rest and headstock veneer front and rear. It has Grover Imperial tuners, of course. The custom cast bronze tailpiece has adjustable break angle, in the D'Aquisto style. Binding is curly maple with ebony purfling. Custom Cedar Creek case. Tom barely played the instrument and it remains in virtually new condition. It has a 19" lower bout, 24.5" scale length, body depth of 3" and 1 3/4" nut. Parallel braced. Its workmanship, materials playability, tone and volume do not disappoint. It is beginning to open up nicely. It's one of only three 19" archtops that Roger has built.
