SN: 109275. Rare shaded top from the 1940s and a 00 body size making it even more uncommon. The shading is the reddish color similar to the Martin mandolins and somewhat reminiscent of the dark tops of the early 30s but with more contrast. It’s in very nice condition and fun to play. The top is a tight grained Sitka spruce with a rosewood bridge and fingerboard, mahogany back and sides and mahogany neck. The neck width is 1 11/16ths at the nut and feels very comfortable and modern. All appears to be original yet the bridge may be an excellent exact repro from a prior owner. Tuners are the original Klusons which work well but show some tarnishing of the buttons. There is moderate playwear throughout, some button rash on the back and minor devoting on the fretboard – all the signs of a guitar that has provided many years of enjoyment. I had the neck reset and frets replaced 5 or 6 years ago. The guitar has made many trips to our cabin on the weekends during that time. It’s a versatile guitar with a somewhat boxy little sound not unlike the Gibson L-00’s of the 30s. With a pick, it’s a different story, with volume, character, and attack. The braces are somewhat tapered at the factory and that may make the difference. It will certainly play circles around later 00-18s I’ve played. The case is probably not Martin but a period correct upgrade – hardshell, gray tolex with blue plush interior (Harptone perhaps).
