2013 Martin D-18 Authentic 1939, SN 1718345, MINT. Here is a spot-on reproduction of Martin’s time-honored 1939 D-18. I’ve had a chance to compare this closely with my own ’39 D-18 (SN 73137) and though a few the details are different, Martin gets it right where it counts. First and foremost, Martin has used a very good grade of Adirondack spruce on the top. There is no aging toner so it looks quite bright and will age as it should. The appointments are identical between the two – tortoise binding (though a little thicker on the new one), black and white rosette and trim, and EXACT ebony bridge (bravo!) with plenty of saddle. The pickguard is the exact shape and a better thirties style material than I’ve seen on other models but not an exact match. The mahogany sealer on the back, sides, and neck is a bit darker on the newer one but it will lighten as the top darkens with age. The neck profile is another area where the match is dead on – almost uncanny. It is super comfortable and fast with its 1 11/16ths nut width and modified V shape. Clearly extra care was taken inside the guitar as well. The bracing is almost an exact copy of the original – modified-X slightly rear shifted toward the bridge, aggressively scalloped braces, and small notched maple bridge plate. Hide glue is used throughout. Sonically, it performs well across all ranges particularly across the bottom end where it is forceful without being boomy. New as it is, it will be fun to see how the sound develops as it’s played in. Overall, it’s a terrific modern guitar and an exceptional value.
