This is as rare as it gets in an early Gibson A Model mandolin, the Artist model. It is similar to Gibson’s black-top model A-4 but with added ultra-fancy appointments. There are gorgeous mother-of-pearl scroll inlays all up and down the fingerboard; the soundhole rosette has a band of abalone shell within its borders of wood marquetry and the tortoise shell pickguard, itself inlaid into the top, not only has pearl scroll inlay but is bordered by pearl as well. The tuners are the ultra-fancy Handels with pearl-and-wire inlaid buttons, so often pirated from these early instruments. The early-style tailpiece cover embossed with “The Gibson” in script is the crowning touch. But wait, there's more! Included is its original rectangular hard shell case, burgundy velvet-lined with two lidded accessory compartments. A bit scuffed on its outside but hey, you just don’t see this kind of outfit every day, if ever. The finish is of course all original with lovely century-old patina, does have a bit of playing wear near the soundhole and some tiny nicks and dings here and there, not unexpected after 118 years. There are no cracks, no structural repairs ever needed nor done. There is a slight bow in the neck which should be attended to by a professional though the action is of a playable height. And the tone is warm and it is LOUD. And something else, very special: On the back of the peghead is an engraved metal plate with the name STELLA DELANO engraved on it. Heirloom from the FDR family? No idea, but definitely worth looking into. Your move. Offered as is for $2495 w/ossc
