1966 Gibson Dove Natural

Natural, with cherry back and sides. We bought this from the original owner. Has some repaired top cracks, replaced pickguard and overspray on top. Otherwise, highly flamed maple back and sides, a fatter neck with the typical 1 9/16” nut width. The frets are in great shape and it has the original bridge. A letter from the owner says it was gifted in 1966 and played for 5-6 years and put away only to discover the pickguard had rotted away, hence the cracks and discoloration on the top. It shows very little wear besides the obvious. Whoever repaired this guitar did good work. They saved the pearl dove pickguard insert a thoughtful move. Also, the wings of the bridge are lifting a bit. But the guitar is a one-owner guitar and the bridge has been like that for decades. Our shop has suggested leaving it. It’s really a lovely original guitar with a rich vintage tone. For the record, they shipped 126 Doves in Natural in 1966. They shipped ten times more 335s that year. The tone is quite appealing with big bass and crisp highs. The neck will surprise you as it’s not the super skinny neck of the era. It’s nicely yellowed and has considerable flame. The Dove was used by rock stars like Keef, Tom Petty, Billy Corgan, Bob Dylan, Aimee Mann and on and on. The longer scale give these great projection.. Has the original nickel Waffle backs and a nice original hard case.
