In 1968 Gibson stopped producing the beloved Les Paul Standard, instead rolling out the mini-humbucker equipped Les Paul Deluxe. Although these Deluxe models were not instantly popular they have gained quite a following over the years thanks in no small part to their association with guitar luminaries such as Pete Townsend and Scott Gorman of the band Thin Lizzy. This particular Deluxe has the ‘70s Gibson “pancake” body which consists of a maple cap top with multiple layers of mahogany and a thin layer of maple in the middle. The mini-humbuckers sound gorgeous with plenty of punch to them. The tuners are period-correct Kluson Deluxes. The jack plate is a replacement. The neck has been re-fretted at some point; the frets have a good amount of life left and the guitar is a treat to play. It has a smaller volute than other Les Pauls of the time period that we have seen (the volutes were added in the late ‘60s into the 1970s to help protect the top of the neck from breaking as easily). It has been set-up by our in-house tech for optimal action and intonation. Thankfully it is the rare ‘70s Gibson that isn’t a total back-breaker, weighing in at 9 ½ lbs. The two-tone Cherry sunburst finish has a nice thin look, letting the wood grain really pop off the top of the body. Honestly the finish is so gorgeous that it is almost hypnotic to look at! It is in great cosmetic condition with only a light scratch on the top near the neck tone control. The back has average wear with a few finish dings and very light belt rash. The neck is very clean with a fantastic feel to it. There is an indentation up the neck, near the 9th/10th fret. It is noticeable but in our opinion did not seem to have an effect on the playability while going up the neck. Overall this is a fine playing vintage Deluxe with a beautiful finish that definitely won’t stick around the shop for very long! Includes original hard shell case.
