The mid 1960s saw a large surge in the popularity of student level solid body electric guitars. Gibson’s Melody Maker line was in competition with Fender’s Mustang and Duo-Sonic II for a quality solid body electric at an affordable price. Unlike Fender’s offerings, the Melody Maker actually had a full scale length neck at 24 3/4″. Gibson began offering custom colors in 1966 such as Fire Engine Red, Pelham Blue and Sparkling Burgundy Metallic.

This 1968 Gibson Melody Maker D is in excellent playing condition and ready to go back to work. It’s completely original except for two pickup height adjustment screws and the bridge. Gibson bridges at the time were compensated for a wound third so I purchased a MojoAxe exact replacement for an unwound third. The bridge design offers the player the versatility of the tremolo or the stability of the wrap tail piece design. The neck and frets are in excellent condition and require no adjustment. There is a very small hairline crack next to the output jack that’s common for these guitars. It’s rock solid and not in need of repair.
