Unlike any previous Gibson electrics, the CES guitars were carved of solid bookmatched spruce and figured maple, producing a tone quality distinctly richer and more complex than the plywood boxes of earlier years. Virtually identical to its acoustic counterpart, the Super 400 CES had only slight modification of the solid spruce bracing to accommodate the pickups and suppress feedback. Early adopters of this versatile guitar spanned the musical spectrum, from jazz wizard Kenny Burrell, to picking pioneer Merle Travis and blues legend Pee Wee Crayton. _=||=_ Only the very earliest examples of the model are fitted with Gibson’s groundbreaking P-90 single coil pickups, highly prized by players and collectors alike for their clear, open tone and extended frequency response. Less than 40 examples of the original series were built in total between 1951 and mid-1954, making the P-90 version the rarest variant of the Super 400CES ever produced.
