  • Description: Retrfofret Stock # 3018. Harp-lute, labeled Levien, c. 1825, made in London, amber varnish finish, curly maple, ebony and ivory purfling, mother-of-pearl, iron. Mordant Levien was based in London but he took out a French patent for his harp lute in 1825.The 3 stave back and the curved bottom are all in medium grain curly maple and bound in ebony. The top is spruce with a carved and gilt wood starburst rosette with a heraldic medallion in the center and surrounded by multilayered ebony and ivory purfling. The entire top is also bound in multi layered ebony and ivory purfling. The bridge is ebony and mother-of0pearl, and the fingerboard has 12 ivory frets decorated with pearl dots. There are three capotasto position holes and three patented mechanical nuts operated from behind the neck. The headstock has 7 original harp tuning pins and is decorated with a carved and gilt wood sunburst. There is a mother-of-pearl plaque reading "Levien, inventeur, brevete 1825" between the two parts of the nut. Formerly in the collection of Rose Augustine.Length is 32 1/2 in. (82.6 cm.), 13 1/8 in. (33.3 cm.) width. Scale length is 18 3/4 in. (476 mm.). Condition as described above. As Is Condition.
