Description

SN: 052. Built by Per Marklund in Stenberg, Sweden. Mr. Marklund may be poised to fill the void created by the retirement of Willi Henkes and Rudi Blazer. I see quite a few similarities – super high quality build materials, impeccable fit and finish and rigorous attention to vintage design and construction. Per has visited the Henkes and Blazer workshop numerous times and Willi “has been like a mentor from a distance” as he developed his business.

This OM-45 is a faithful and unabashed emulation of one of the most beautiful guitars ever made. Imagine how challenging and humbling it would be for a builder to take on a project like this. Notwithstanding, this beauty is unique in Per’s product line. His typical top is made from moon harvested Alpine spruce. This one is Possum Red Spruce sourced by the American customer who custom ordered it. It’s finished in a hand-rubbed shellac, a technique he’s no longer offering. The back and sides come from Per’s magnificent stash of Brazilian. The color and figuring are stunning. The workmanship is special. Every edge is trimmed in abalone and bound in ivoroid. Abalone fretboard inlays and traditional “torch” inlay on the face plate. Gold plated Waverly tuners. No detail has been overlooked. The frets are brass. Per has risen to the occasion. It’s an incredibly successful build.

Inside is the structure of a prewar Martin OM; forward X brace, scalloped spruce bracing with two tone bars and small maple bridge plate. The “Marklund Guitars” logo is heat stamped on the back strip. Per typically uses graphite reinforcement in the neck but this guitar has a steel T-bar. As you can imagine, the tone is still developing but it’s playing great right now. Fingerpickers will appreciate the strong bass notes and balance between the mids and trebles. With a heavy pick it has nearly the power of a dreadnought. It would be exciting to play this guitar in over the next few years.

Condition is “as new”. Comes with a Hiscox hardshell case.
