  • Description:

The mystique behind prewar Martins extends beyond the dreadnought models to the very popular 000 style. This 000 is almost shockingly structurally sound. It appears to have no repaired cracks on the mahogany back and sides or—significantly—the top. Aside from an assortment of dings and dents, it has very few finish blemishes to mention. The neck joint is extremely tight and clean, having had an extraordinarily professional neck reset. It doesn’t appear that the bridge or pickguard have been removed at any point.

Cosmetically, the graduated-size abalone inlays make this one stand out in an elegant way.  It has the original tuners and bridge.  Although it’s been honeyed a bit with age, the Adirondack spruce top still shows the trademark light color and a pretty tight grain.

Whether strummed or fingerpicked, this one is not too loud, but very clear, open, and even—a classic sound.  It’s dynamic and responsive, with very good action.  It seems to have a lot of room for adjustment if needed, with plenty of saddle height left.

One other thing that makes the sound of this Martin remarkable is that it lands just on the short side of a significant change in the manufacturer’s guitars.  The x-brace on all Martins was moved further from the soundhole in mid-1939, which resulted in a general sound that, to some, is noticeably less dynamic and rich (this change adds a lot to the high reputation of ‘30s Martins).  Even though this 000 has the later, deeper x-brace setup, its tone is extremely rich and deep.  Cosmetically, structurally, and tonally, this is a true standout piece.
