Description

Excellent, crack-free, collector-grade condition Martin Vintage Series D-28V from 1985!

Made in exceedingly small quantities (estimated approximately 25 built between 1983 and 1985**), this Vintage Series instrument was limited edition and built far closer to a "golden age" D-28 than anything else being built at the time. Sitka spruce top, Brazilian rosewood back, sides, and headstock plate, mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard and diamond/square inlays, with an ebony bridge. Small maple bridge plate, scalloped tone bars and forward-shifted bracing (you won't find any of that on a 60's D-28) The neck profile is a soft V shape featuring a nut width of 1.68" (1 11/16th).

This is a tremendous guitar in exceptional condition displaying only the most minor playing and handling wear. It was clearly taken care of its entire life. The original frets hardly display any wear, there are no cracks anywhere on the body or neck, and it shows no signs of any kind of repairs or modifications. The action is sitting just a hair above 3/32nd on the bass side and 5/64th on the treble with 12-53 gauge strings and some room left to come down, but not a huge amount (which I don’t think would really be necessary, anyway). The tone is clear and defined with excellent bass presence and volume projection. If you've ever wanted to get in to a Brazilian rosewood Martin dreadnaught, this makes an excellent case for itself being that it has far more in common with it's highly-desirable predecessors than anything made from the 60's and beyond. Almost 40 years of age and seasoning and it will only get better as time goes on! This is a great, great instrument that would undoubtedly sit well in any studio or personal collection. With original black Martin hard case in excellent condition.

Nut width: 1.68"

Neck depth: 1st - .86" 9th - .97"

All questions welcome. Worldwide shipping available but is delayed until my new CITES permits arrive.

**Admittedly, I have not asked my friends at Martin myself about quantities known or estimated, but lifted this information as it has been reported multiple times by other knowledgeable dealers who have had examples of this guitar. However, I will say this -- according to page 290 of my third edition (1988) of Mike Longworth's Martin book, approximately 268 Vintage Series D-28's were made between 1983 and 1985 ('83 - 128, '84 - 50, '85 - 90). Conversely, there is apparently a differentiation between this one that says "D-28V" & "Limited Edition" on the label and "Brazilian" on the neck block and others in the series. I'm not entirely sure this is true. But, again - reputable guitar shops have given this "records suggest approximately 25 made" line on multiple occasions, so perhaps they know something I don't. If I learn something different, it will be reflected here.
