Martin / 1998 D-45
The first D-45 was created for Gene Autry in 1933 and was considered the top model in Martin's dreadnought line, known for its ornate "45" style decoration. Production ceased in 1942 due to World War II, however, and only 91 instruments were produced during this period. Due to the rarity and quality of these guitars, pre-war models can fetch between $250,000 and $400,000, making them some of the most expensive guitars made. The second series of D-45s, begun in 1968, increased production and included Stephen Stills and John Mayer for including various special versions and signature models.
Musicians appreciate the D-45 for its excellent bass response, rich tone, high volume, and balanced sound. Notable musicians who have played this guitar, often described as sounding like magic, include Gene Autry, Stephen Stills, and Neil Young, who considers the D-45 his primary steel-string acoustic guitar.
The D-45's influence extends beyond its sound to its role in music history, particularly in the folk-rock movement of the 1960s. Musicians like Stephen Stills and Neil Young made the guitar popular, giving it mythical status among collectors and players alike. This era established the D-45 as more than just an instrument, a cultural icon that embodied the sound and spirit of an influential musical period.
The individual featured here is a D-45 made in 1998. It is characterized by the ageing of the paint to a brownish color, which is unique to this age, and the beckoning pattern PG also had a strong reddish tint. The neck is rounder than the current one and feels very easy to grip for me. And the bracing is scalloped, which gives it a very open and fast-rising sound. There are a lot of scratches on the neck, and although it is not a beautiful instrument, it has been used well, and you can enjoy the high quality high range that is typical of the D-45.
