Martin / 2003 D-45

The first D-45 was built in 1933 for Gene Autry. It was the top model in Martin's dreadnought line, known for its ornate "45" style decoration. However, production ceased in 1942 due to World War II, and only 91 instruments were produced during this period. Due to the rarity and quality of these guitars, the Pre-War models can fetch between $250,000 and $400,000, making them among the most expensive. the second series of D-45s, begun in 1968, increased production, and for Stephen Stills and John Mayer including various special versions and signature models.

Musicians appreciate the D-45 for its excellent bass response, rich tone, high volume, and balanced sound. Often described as "magical sounding," notable musicians who have played this guitar include Gene Autry, Stephen Stills, and Neil Young, who considers the D-45 his primary steel-string acoustic guitar.

The D-45's influence extends beyond its sound to its role in music history, particularly in the folk-rock movement of the 1960s. Musicians like Stephen Stills and Neil Young made the guitar popular, giving it mythical status among collectors and players alike. This era established the D-45 as more than just an instrument, a cultural icon that embodied the sound and spirit of an influential musical period.

The D-45 presented here is a 2003 D-45.
As a 2003 production year, it is a beautiful piece with no major scratches that stand out.
As is typical of the Style-45, it is made of very fine-grained spruce, and the side backs are made of quarter-sawn rosewood.
While the current standard model has a 44.5mm nut width and non-scalloped X-bracing, this 2003 model has a 43mm nut width and scalloped X-bracing.
While the current model offers a more "clean" sound, this model impresses with its spacious and open sound.
The elegant spread of each string can only be experienced with a "Martin D-45" and it is easy to see why so many guitarists desire this model.

Comes with the original Martin hard case.
