  • Description: I think you could call this mandolin 'cute'..it's small size, ice cream cone headstock, multiple binding around sound hole and top, shaped fingerboard extension and the petite period hard case to go with it all add up to a nice little package! At one time, this mando had a label pasted inside the soundhole, but it's been removed. However, the headstock, both shape and decorative pressing on the back, point to an instrument made by Stromberg Voisinet in the years just before the company became Kay, the late 1920's. The mando has a few back cracks, some separation through the soundhole ring, a bit of distortion to the top just to the upper treble side of the soundhole (this is evident even without string tension)and one of the black tuner buttons is a replacement. Otherwise, looks all original and very playable up and down the neck. It produces a pleasant tone. Overall length is ~ 24"; width ~ 8 1/2"; scale length ~ 13 1/4"; nut width ~ 1 1/8". Top is spruce and back and sides appear birch painted black. The case is worth providing dimensions for, too, because it's as nice a period mandolin case as one would like to find: inside length is ~ 25 1/4"; inside width will fit 9 1/2" nicely; length of body cavity is about 13 1/2"; very attractive burnt amber plush lining is in excellent condition. Case handle is missing it's leather wrap and metal parts show oxidation. There is an oval, embossed stamp on the bottom, outside of the case that says 'Trade Mark Warranted' with a symbol in the center.
