Bozo Podunavac (pronounced bo-zho pod oo nav ack) was a Serbian-born master luthier / guitar builder who emigrated to the U.S. in 1959. He was raised in Belgrade, Yugoslavia and served his apprenticeship with master luthier Milutin Mladenovic and graduated in 1950. He moved to Chicago, when he came to the US and for a time worked in the repair department of a musical instruments dealer and manufacturer. In 1964 he opened his own shop and began building guitars with his name "Bozo" on the peghead. Bozo apprenticed in the old world tradition of his homeland, and relished building highly ornate instruments. This unusual Requinto model designed w/a mid-sized "Bell" shape has to be his most significant Flat Top ever, made for my old friend Dave Epstein on March 3rd, 2000. Its Adirondack Spruce Top is perfect having nice straight grain. Bozo's choice for this beauty is this amazing "AAAAA" quilted-flamey figured Koa, it's the best Koa we have ever seen hands down. Its 1 piece mahogany neck is full sized & comfortable. What makes this Requite so special is Bozo used every trick in his book of marqetry on every edge of its body & all over its ebony fingerboard. To just state he paired gorgeous colorful Abolone surrounded by Herringbone is quite the understatement. Its a maze of incredible layers of these items along with dozens of layers in between & is on every border on every side of its body & heel cap. Then Bozo did the same treatment to its fingerboard, headstock, sound hole rosette & bridge making this the most ornate guitar in the world. Finally he put a set of Gotoh tuners on her w/matching Abolone buttons. We fell in love with this at a guitar show around 2000 & finally acquired it just a few years later from Dave. We took it (if possible) a step beyond that & had a matching ornate Koa & abalone carved sound hole cover to complete this Requinto to its fabulous state. Its label is signed & dated by the Master & clearly states its provanance. are a few personal photos of Bozo himself holding & showing off his workmanship while at the 1 & only Miami Guitar Show. Bozo sadly passed away in 2015 while living in Florida, making his guitars very desirable today. This 1-off design will truly be a perfect investment to use & enjoy. It is in Near Mint all original condition. It comes with a nice hardshell case.
