This is the second I have had in 35+ years of having a storefront, or maybe third- I sold this to my store manager several years ago, and just got it back, so it is one of the original two! Overall nice shape, though there is some chipping on the treble horn that makes me thing it may have had a strap button there at one time, otherwise pretty nice. Virtually no fret wear, truss rod works, pickup sounds amazing. The back red pad was missing, it has an hourglass looking symbol on the pad (going with the Black Widow motif and all) so we tracked down a legendary upholsterer in our area, sent him pictures and he made one that looks dead on, and snaps on the body like the originals, with no modification. And it doesn't have 50 years of sweat and funk built in! There is a small place on the back on the neck, near where it bolts to the body, like maybe the neck was put together there out of 2 pieces, but hasn't moved in the 4 or 5 years my buddy owned it. The knobs look kind of right, but not exactly like other knobs I have seen when I look for other examples. Who knows? A few dings and light wear, but a stellar example. Non original but good hard case.
The little bit of research I have done makes me think this one was made by Matsumoku in Japan. There's a good site for Black Widows, and they state the Japanese ones were the closest to what the designer envisioned. If you are into guitars I probably don't have to sell you on the quality of Matsumoku made instruments! Thanks for looking!
