MORTIMER, Alexander (Artist). Move Over Rover And Let Jimi Take Over. An Original Portrait of Jimi Hendrix. 2005. Acrylic paint and ink on canvas, 76 x 48 inches (1930 x 1219 mm).

A stack on Marshalls in the background, a lefty Stratocaster, a dripping fuel can at lower left, and you know his guitar will soon be in flames, if not by gas then by Jimi starting a fire with every note he ever played. Artist Alexander Mortimer captures Hendrix in mid-groove, a long, sustained note hanging in the air before Jimi - #1 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time - brings it all back home. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.

Here, Jimi is playing his 1968 maple-cap Fender Stratocaster in Olympic white. That guitar, serial #240981, was given by Jimi to Mitch Mitchell in 1970 who, in 1990, sold it at Sothby's for $300,000.

Los Angeles-based artist Alexander Mortimer took his degree in Fine/Graphic Arts at College of Marin in Northern California. Over the last twenty years his distinct style, flair, feel for his subjects and the rock n' roll vibe have attracted the eyes of people all across the state and earned him a dedicated fanbase. (#369)
