A guitar that shows the fine art of guitar making that Bashkin is famous for. High-grade alpine spruce top over the heirloom-quality bookmatched Brazilian rosewood that is unique in an extreme way.
Michael Bashkin's work in Central American forestry is well-known. His stash of wood and his holistic approach to its form as it relates to function is also quite renowned.
This guitar was made for a Willie's customer who sadly passed away earlier this year. He was a fine fingerstyle guitarist who wanted the best fingerstyle guitar money could buy. He and his wife were fans of Japanese woodcuts and the headstock inlay is from an 1822 work by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi that hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago. The instrument took 2 years to build.
The options selected were OM size, cutaway, fan frets for a hybrid scale length of 25.75" on the bass side and 25.5" for the treble strings, and the side port is an f-hole. Micheal Bashkin had a Brazilian rosewood set "#99", that was reserved. The 1.75" width at the saddle spreads out to 2.25" at the saddle, and the neck has gorgeous koa binding and pearl side dots.
Its tone is more modern than vintage, perfect for a fingerstyle player to hear every note. The Brazilian rosewood looks and sounds majestic.
Here is a bit more about the pearl inlay on the headstock that is still displayed on the Bashkin website after 12 years. As mentioned above, it is a representation of an 1822 woodcut by Japanese artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi called "Fujiwara no Yasumasa Plays the Flute by Moonlight" depicting a folk tale about a bandit who was charmed of out of attempted murder by the enchanting flute music of his potential victim.
Willie's is proud to offer this incredible instrument in its original case. Our customer played it but it remains in excellent condition. New, this would be $20k and likely over a 2-year wait.
