Here we have a 1960s Harmony Sovereign H1260 Jumbo guitar which has undergone the famed Baxendale Conversion process. Scott Baxendale is an Athens Georgia-based luthier who has developed his own proprietary process for turning old Harmony and Stella ladder-braced guitars from fun couch players into great playing, great sounding, X-braced tone monsters.
Baxendale’s process includes taking off the back of the guitar, repairing any cracks or structural issues, removing all existing bracing, and adding his own X-braced pattern of scalloped braces in quarter sawn Adirondack or Engleman spruce before replacing the back. He also performs a neck set and refret, planing (or replacing) the existing fingerboard to a perfect 12 or 14 inch radius. New vintage-style tuners and a bone nut are installed. Lastly, Scott makes a new bridge with a bone saddle. The original finish of the guitar is retained so the cool vintage vibe is not lost. Pretty amazing.
Basic Specs: Grover reissue Sta-tite tuners. 1 3/4 inch Bone nut. Mahogany neck with a 25.5 inch scale length. Neck depth of .91 inches at the first fret and 1.10 inches at the twelfth fret. Bound Rosewood fingerboard with 19 Jumbo frets and a 12 inch radius. Rosewood bridge with Bone saddle and Maple bridge plate. Original “Tortoise” pickguard.
We love Baxendale conversions and we’re sure you will, too. When your buddies come over and pick up your “old” guitar, their minds will be blown away with how it plays and sounds. All Baxendale guitars come with a quality hardshell case, too!
