SN 563. Here is a powerhouse D-18 from the workshop of Willi Henkes and Rudi Blazer who, in my opinion, are the finest traditional builders working today. In their own words “these models are authentic recreations in design and construction or modern interpretations crafted exclusively by hand by using traditional methods and materials of the highest quality”. This model is known as the Phoenix and this build was done from their blueprint of a 1936 Martin D-18. It is true to form. Specs include two-piece mahogany back and sides bound in faux tortoise, a hand harvested Austrian Alpine Spruce two-piece top with correct multi-ply binding and b/w rosette motif, figured faux tortoise pickguard, and perfect replica ebony bridge. Structurally, it has the forward X scalloped bracing with two scalloped tone bars. The neck is carved exactly like my ’36 D-18 – somewhat larger in the shoulders than the later years. It has the 1 ¾” nut, the wide string spacing at the bridge, Waverly tuners, and inlaid B&H logo. The top is finished in a light sunburst. This is a new guitar but the early tone characteristics are power and drive, with warmth and darker low end overtones. It thrives as a flatpicker but the wide nut and string spacing make this a pleasing finger-picker as well. Comes with a new high quality hardshell case. The usual pictures later this week.
