The arrival of this new Honeycaster 'Hot Rod' DC model in Olympic White comes just about a year after receiving our first one back in 2021, which was honestly one of the best small-shop HSS builds we'd ever put our hands on. Well, we're here to say he's done it again. This guitar is a MONSTER.
If you've ever been a fan of that classic late 70s or 80s "hot rod" vibe in an old strat, look no further. Laurent continues to nail this style of build. The Maple cap neck combined with the Alder body gives a polite nod to a specific period (1968) when Fender started building two-piece Maple necks. The hits don't stop there, though. Laurent installed a vintage DiMarzio PAF humbucker in the bridge position with a pair of vintage 70s Stratocaster pickups in the neck and middle positions, respectively. The result? Fat, authoritative bridge pickup tones with nice snap and top end power, coupled with a bright, slightly scooped single coil tone presents the player with tons of great tonal options. All that being said, you don't really give up much of the vintage sensibility here. At its core, it offers up old school tone in a new package that feels sleek and refined.
We know looks aren't always the best way to shop for an instrument, but we'd be lying if we said it didn't inform some decision making. I mean, how can you look at this guitar and NOT get excited?! The lightly aged Olympic White finish sits perfectly against a beautiful Spitfire pickguard that presents a unique and captivating contrast while also highlighting a wonderfully figured maple neck. Eye-popping would be an understatement!
