Retrofret Stock # 3797. Bronson Honolulu Deluxe Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar, c. 1936, made in Chicago, sunburst top, natural back and sides finish, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, black tolex hard shell case. This is a very interesting and rare 1930's higher grade flat-top guitar. Bronson was a Detroit-based spinoff of the Oahu publishing empire and did a similar business selling primarily Hawaiian guitar arrangements to students, and the instruments to go with them! This unusual flat-top is an example of a very high-end Bronson instrument-most of them were student grade. It is also unusual in being a purpose-built Spanish-style guitar-most Bronson instruments were Hawaiian lap-style guitars. The instrument was built by Regal in Chicago, and like the similar Bacon & Day guitars of the period is an example of that company's very best work. This is an X-braced Brazilian rosewood flat-top of the same general dimensions as the Gibson L-00 family but with a longer scale neck, mounted quite far up on the body. The neck itself is substantial feeling with a soft V" profile and bound ebonized fingerboard. The headstock is faced in white pearloid with the "Bronson Honolulu De-Luxe" logos beautifully incised and painted. The rosewood back is solid and the sides are laminate; both show a beautiful figure and are finished in natural, while the top has a subtle shaded sunburst. This is a powerful sounding and very unique 1930's flat top guitar.Overall length is 41 in. (104.1 cm.), 14 5/8 in. (37.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 3/8 in. (11.1 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 in. (635 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.). Very clean overall; There is only light wear and one very small repaired top crack just behind the bridge evident. The back of neck appears to have possibly been oversprayed up to the headstock area; there is a repair to the neck heel and tuners are recent openback Grover Sta-Tite re-issues. The bridge is a very fine exact repro. The neck has been recently reset and playability is excellent. Excellent - Condition.
