85081 – Sweet sounding and playing 000-21 from 1943 in the original purple felt double diamond case. The guitar has had some repairs but is structurally solid. Most of all, it is fun to play and has the warmth and balance that is the signature sound of a Martin rosewood 000. The 21 model has been around since the 19th century but the 000-21 was introduced only in 1938. The least expensive rosewood model, it’s simple, elegant design is a cross between a model 18 and a 28 with a touch of art deco. The top is simply bound in a faux-tortoiseshell with a b/w/b celluloid trim. The rosette is herringbone framed by two b/w/b rings and the fretboard has 28-style snowflakes. The back strip is herringbone. The rosewood will sometimes have some crazy figuring, not prized by Martin at the time. I’ve seen the boards with racing stripes like this one referred to as “the magic log”. I’ve had three guitars from this board and they’ve all had that wonderful, warm sound. The nut width is 1 11/16” with 2 ¼” string spacing at the bridge and 24.9” scale. Beautiful setup and low, low action make it easy to play. If you guessed, from the price, that there are some warts, you guessed right. There are two shortish cracks emanating from the south side of the bridge and short cracks on each of the wings. The bridge plate has been replaced with a small maple job that is close but not exactly correct. There are two pieces of wood on the inside directly under the cracks off the wings of the bridge, most likely used to bring them flush and shore them up. The replacement bridge is close but not exact. It’s possible that there was a larger bridge or the bridge was repositioned for intonation. The repairs seem well thought through and are designed to bring the top into its rightful place. There is some touchup around the bridge and the scars you can see have been nicely drop-filled. Originally, this had the wartime flat back tuners but they were replaced in the 50s by the cast Grovers which still work well. The saddle is likely a replacement but the nut looks original as are the bridge pins and endpin. And the case. All latches and hinges work. No smells, minimal fading of the felt. The exterior has light to moderate scuffing and dingers. Not sold separately. Here’s a chance to own a scalloped braced, Adi-topped, BRW Martin for the price of a mid-50s Sitka top straight braced rig. All on consignment.
