SN 67723: Perhaps the most significant guitar I’ve had in the shop in quite some time. Purchased recently from Vintage Instruments in Philadelphia, circumstances are such that the owner must reluctantly sell. Rarely do I see instruments in this condition. It is original, crack free and beautifully set up. This year was the height of Martin’s golden age – the year where they pushed the design of the guitar to the point of perfection and the last full year before they made changes. It is a high-X or forward-X design. The grain in the Adirondack spruce top runs tight, the quarter-sawn BRZ back and sides run straight and narrow, and the elegant 28-style appointments complete the picture – snowflakes, herringbone trim, ivoroid binding top and back, zig-zag back strip, simple rosette. The previous owners appear to have polished the guitar more than played it yet the tone is beguiling and powerful. Fingerpickers will enjoy the powerful bottom end. Flatpickers will appreciate the consistent volume and timbre across strings and up and down the neck. The condition as I mentioned is highly polished but there are signs of occasional wear and age. Not many. There is a spot on top where the finish has fleked off nd one on the heel, probably from a prior neck reset. The pictures tell the story. But the tidiness of the inside matches that of the outside and when one looks inside it’s hard to suppress a giggle. For the record, the nut is 1 ¾”, the scale is 24.9”, and the string spacing at the bridge measures a hair over 2 5/16”. The bridge and bridge plate are original but the pins are proper new ones from Antique Acoustics. The case is original and quite clean and solid for its age. At one time the case was labeled “1937 000-28” and the ghost of those letters is still there supporting my theory that this was once part of a big collection. Thanks for reading this far. Please call or email with any questions.
