Description

161467. This guitar was purchased by its current owner in 1969. Around 1980 he had the guitar refinished by a Martin warranty service agent near Phoenixville PA. The guitar also had a patch to the back and side done at that time, both are well done and under the finish (visible in the pics). The guitar has had its original tuners replaced with gold finish Grover Rotomatics, the upper mounting screw holes from an earlier set are visible on the back of the headstock as they are not covered by the current tuners. The bridge is not original and is slightly over sized, the bridge has had a crack between the pin holes recently repaired which is closed and holding well. The pick guard is also a replacement, most likely done at the time of the refin. The owner of the guitar is not completely clear on the time line of each of these mods but it thinks they were all done at the time of the refinish. The nut is also a replacement. The guitar appears to have been refretted at some time in the long past, the current frets are sufficient for the moment but have been leveled and re-crowned in the past and are low enough that they will require replacement when they show wear again (they are beginning to show it now). The fret board shows some wear, indicating the many hours that this guitar spent being played, but nothing deep into the rosewood. If you are still reading, time to get to the good points...the top thickness (often in question on refinished guitars) appears unaltered. The top, back and sides are crack free and the interior bracing and bridge plate are all original and without any damage or repair. The refinish quality is very good, though the sheen is closer to a semi gloss than the full gloss of a factory finish. Could be wet-sanded and buffed for a more shiny look if desired. The finish is in good shape on the body with the exception of one spot on the bass shoulder where there's a little blistering and one the neck where there is wear through to the wood behind the 5th fret. The top is very flat under tension, shows very little deflection or rotation. The neck was reset (probably when the refin was done) and the angle is perfect. The neck is straight under tension, and the action is set at 7/64" at the low E 12th fret and 6/64" at the high E with a full 1/8" of saddle showing, plenty to bring the action down if desired. The sound of the guitar is excellent, strong across the entire range but particularly strong mids and great projection overall. Comes with a non-original hard shell case. Gbase users inquire for more pics (they only allow 6 pics per posting) and I'll email more if you are interested in the guitar. $2500
