Description

1948 Martin 2-15 Mandolin

This fine carved top Martin mandolin is missing its original pickguard and has had two tuner buttons replaced but everything else is original to the instrument including the hard shell case. The mandolin can be tuned to pitch and played but currently the tail block has come loose from the top, causing the block to tilt slightly and contributing to two top cracks and a slight depression of the top between the block and the bridge. The depression has not impacted the action, as it does not extend to the arch of the top but is localized below the bridge. See pics. What needs to be done is for the block to be glued back in place and the top cracks repaired, which will restore structural stability to the mandolin. I've got too many projects lying around and have to thin the project herd. The back, sides and neck are all flame maple, the top is likely red spruce. The fret board and bridge are ebony, the head veneer is rosewood. The tuners are the original Waverlys. The neck is straight under tension and the intonation is good. It looks to have had a neck reset in the past as there is a thin ebony wedge (well done and difficult to see) under the end of the fret board. A few of the six original tuner buttons (two are replaced, six are original) show some mottling in the color, none are currently a problem functionally though one has been repaired, they may need to be replaced in the future but are all functional now. There's some finish wear to the top which is visible in the photos as well as some minor finish wear on the back of the neck. Overall cosmetic presentation is good though. Action is set at 4/64" at the low E at the 12th fret. Comes with original hard shell case which is in good condiiton, lining, hinges, handle and latches all present and functional. $795 plus shipping. I guarantee the mandolin to be as described. That said, as a project piece it is sold AS IS, so please ask any and all questions you may have before you buy. I will accept a return only under condition that is demonstrably different that described and pictured in this listing. Thanks!
