Description

Offered is this super Collings I-35LC built just a few months ago. For many players, the Collings I-35, in any of its various iterations, is a guitar that beats the Gibson ES at it's own game to become perhaps the best semi-hollow electric on the market.

Being an 'LC' model I-35 this instrument has a 'laminated construction' Maple body, which many players prefer because it is said that the laminated wood resists feedback a bit better and has a more focused tone than the solid carved bodies. This beauty is finished in Jet Black gloss nitrocellulose lacquer and has a total weight of just under 7 pounds. The neck is made of Mahogany and this one received Collings' optional 60's neck carve that measures .83" at the first fret and .92" at the twelfth. It has a 24-7/8" string scale. The bound Indian Rosewood fretboard has a 12" radius, a 1-11/16" nut, medium frets and MOP dots inlays. The electronics on this guitar consist of Lollar low wind humbuckers, DiMarzio 500K pots, Xicon caps and a 50's style wiring setups. The bridge is a TonePros and the tuners are Gotohs with ivoroid buttons.

Play this guitar and you recognize that it is based on the ES formula, but has been built with a precision that Gibson has not been able to match. While this guitar has a slightly smaller 60's neck carve, it is not significantly smaller than their standard neck shape. In fact, I didn't even notice the difference until after speaking with my good friend Mark Althans of Collings. That said, players who find the typical Collings neck a touch too large are apt to be thrilled!

Like virtually all the guitars Collings builds, this I-35 feels like it was carved from a single piece of wood. The playability bests most any guitar you can find regardless of price. The tone matches or exceeds that of most any ES model I have ever played. Check out the brief sound sample included below and I suspect you will agree.

Despite being finished in gloss black this guitar remains in near mint condition and shows no flaws of any significance. Some very slight pick scratches on the pickguard are all you will find and even these are extremely slight (see photo). The frets are as new. It comes in it's original Collings/Ameritage case, also in near mint condition.

A new I-35LC like this one now goes for approximately $5,500. Get this superb and near new 2020 example for quite a bit less. Most who have tried an I-35 agree that this is one of the best semi-hollow electrics available at any price. Try one and I am sure you will agree!
