Jimmy D’Aquisto, to most, is known as the most important guitar maker of the 20th Century. He worked for his mentor, John D’Angelico, for 13 years before John’s passing. In 1965 Jimmy took over the reins of D’Angelico & eventially made his own name in the guitar making industry. This cool 17″ fully Electric Hollow Body guitar has a very interesting past, yet having its early history a bit unknown as Jimmy never serial #’d this model as he did his fancy arch tops. Perhaps the body was originally made by or for John D’Angelico c.1965 as many of John’s laminated body guitars were made by United or Code as per John’s design. It is said it was left on John’s bench when he passed away & Jimmy took it & completed it by the end of 1966. Its Sunburst finish is lovely & incorporates what became Jimmy’s signature “S” holes as compared by John’s “F” hole design. Its 1 piece flamey maple neck is pure Jimmy as it has his personal headstock design & incorporates his modernized cupola/finial and pearl inlaid scroll. It has “Electric” engraved by Jimmy inside the scroll & retains its mother of pearl “Empire State Building” Truss Rod cover that was John D’s most prevalent trait on all of his guitars. It also has pearl block inlays in an ebony fingerboard. It is equipped w/a pair of period Guild Humbucking pickups along with a set of Gibson gold capped knobs. It also sports a set of Grover tuners & one of Jimmy’s 1st engraved Tailpieces finishing it off just beautifully. We have had its White body binding replaced as many of these 50’s & 60’s guitars by Gretsch, Epiphone & Gibson had the same issues of shrinkage, crystallization & cracking. We also installed a correct & perfect replacement wooden pickgard. This was part of the Chinery Collection for many years & is featured in his book. The fact remains today that this was a guitar made & or completed by Jimmy D’Aquisto & was his 1st fully electric guitar he ever produced. It also was THE guitar that made the bean counters @ Fender want to reproduce their own D’Aquisto Jazz guitar that was so darn popular. It has a fantastic & authentic past & is one of the best Jazz Guitars you could ever want as it plays & sounds incredible. Other than its new body binding & new pickgard, it appears in excellent all original condition overall & has to be one of the rarest & most valuable guitars ever produced by Jimmy D. Comes complete with a nice Gibson period hard case.
