Offered for sale;

Used 1972 Favilla FH5 Dreadnought acoustic guitar serial number 52542.

This guitar is in very good condition. The neck has been reset, there are a few marks on the back where the heel meets the body. The bottom of the heel has been refinished dark brown and some minor finish imperfections are visible due to the neck reset. The remainder of the guitar cosmetically is very good.

This is an all mahogany instrument, back, sides, top and neck. The fingerboard is rosewood. Side by side, the tone is quite comparable to a Martin D-15M.

Thomas Favilla states:
“The Favilla Brothers started building string instruments in the United States in 1890. Four years later John (Giovanni) and his brother Joseph, a violin builder, formed a company in 1894. (A generation earlier the family was building string instruments in Italy under great-grandfather Francesco).”

“In the United States, in 1890, they started in a combination music store and instrument shop located at 161 Bowery, and at one point 200 & 201 Grand Street in New York City. In the early 1920's they employed 55 people, building thousands of ukuleles as well as mandolins, banjos, guitars and some violins (built by Joseph). If it had strings on it the Favilla brothers built it.”

“Over the years there was a close relationship between the Favilla family and John D'Angelico and James (Jimmy) D'Aquisto. John and Jimmy (who was John's apprentice in the 1950's) were truly the Stradivari of guitar builders. They are gone and I have seen no one who comes near them in artistic talent in eliciting such shear tonal quality. As Jimmy D'Aquisto once said, "A lot of good cabinetmakers out there but no artists". A lot of people making nice looking instruments but not the superior, great sounding ones.”

Although Favilla guitars are not widely known, they have been in circulation for many decades. There is much more information about the family and the business available via internet research.

This generation of Favilla guitars were produced between 1962-1973, we have not been able to determine an exact year of production for this instrument.

This is a somewhat “rare bird” of a dreadnaught, excellent tone, nice playability. Collect or play this mahogany beauty.

Hard-shell case included.

“We carefully inspect every instrument when we buy it and bring it up to our standards before we offer it for sale. We also do a full set up before we ship. If you decide to purchase this guitar, please let us know what gauge strings you prefer.”

*Please note: we do our best giving descriptions of used pieces. We have found it impossible to describe every mark on an instrument or amp that is not in the "mint" category. Also, what's important to you may not be important to someone else. For example, you may say, "I don't care what it looks like as long as it plays or sounds well." Another person may say, "Body cosmetics are very important to me so tell me about every scratch, nick and blemish." So, please ask the questions that are most important to you. If you ask they will be answered. They are free and there's no limit. Additional photos can also be made available.

This is a specific item that is also being offered for sale in our brick & mortar location. It is possible that it has just been sold. Please ask if it is still available before purchasing.

*It is our policy to require a signature on delivery of all musical instruments. Please let us know if you prefer no signature required when ordering or we will automatically require a signature.

If you prefer your item to be sent without a required signature Imperial Guitar and the selected carrier can no longer be responsible for the security of the package once it has been delivered.
