Up for sale, a 1956 Fender Champion lap steel in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This early Fender steel is finished in its original yellow pearloid wrap and boasts a Wolfetone Cub Telecaster pickup with a reshaped baseplate to accommodate the factory pickup route. A soulful and detailed sounding steel with plenty of twang and sparkle on tap, its no coincidence that this steel shares the tonal properties of Fender's earliest electric guitars, given that the pickup is identical. Strung with fresh 12-52 roundwound strings, the Champion has been a mainstay of gigging musicians and recording artists for decades.

The headstock features a clean chrome plate embossed with the lightning bolt "Fender Electric Instruments" logo, along with a set of reissue Kluson Deluxe single line tuners. These Klusons turn smoothly and match the footprint of the originals perfectly, with cream oval buttons. The metal playing surface overlay on the pearloid is also quite clean, with no notable wear.

The chrome pickup cover and control plate have plenty of shine left in the chrome, with original knurled dome knobs. The wiring harness features the two original Stackpole pots which date to 1956, and the tone cap is a modern ceramic disc replacement. The pearloid wrap is vibrant and clean, with one scuff on the back edge near the string ferrules, and a chip of missing pearloid adjacent to the treble side of the metal nut. The Wolfetone Cub pickup is wound to 7.17k ohms and features alnico V magnets, for a sound that is as smooth and punchy as it is spanky and bright. The pickup route also had to be enlarged just slightly to accommodate the wider baseplate.

This Champion sounds great and features one of the best modern boutique pickups for capturing an early, authentic Tele-esque tone!
