I remember listing another 50's Tele Relic recently and the first guy that inquired about it said, "It doesn't have that huge, U- shaped neck, does it?" I hesitantly replied that it did not and held my breath- many 50's style Tele players want that baseball bat neck and that one did not. He came back with "Good" and before I knew it, we had another fine new member of the Elk Nation in the herd. This Tele is exactly like the other one in that not only does it come in at a light 7 lbs, 10 oz, it has a gorgeous medium "C" neck profile that's so easy on the left hand. Lightweight and resonant as a crying baby, this thing really sounds off and yet again, I had to pry the thing out of Lee's hands (and he's primarily a Les Paul guy.) And, as the proverbial cherry on top of the cake, it comes in a beautiful Fiesta Red- one of our favorite colors because firstly, few Fender Custom Shop guitars are produced in this color and secondly, it's different and I think that deep down inside, the reason we're onstage in the first place is to be different. I mean, it's much easier to get M.I.L.F.s and hotties if you play in a band than if you drive a doggone UPS truck, right? I actually tried that technique with my old Lake Placid Blue Jazz bass many years ago and was unfortunately successful. There was a girl sitting at the end of the bar in an old dive we were playing and when we finished the set, I ambled up to the bar to get, you guessed it- a beer. She said, "I like your blue bass" and I replied with something like, "Why thank you. It's called Lake Placid Blue." Next thing I knew, I woke up in a strange apartment (everybody lived in apartments back then) with a wheezing Pekingese sitting on my chest and a girl that was as cockeyed as Leon Spinks asking if I wanted a cup of coffee. I immediately knew that the power of playing a custom colored Fender had cursed me and there would be no quick exit for me. She had me and the fly was in the spider's web, as they say. When I finally did make it home (scarred and quite tired,) I sold the hell out of that bass and vowed to work on my "overly friendly chick at the bar scanning skills." Now I'm not saying that this will happen to you, but if you're playing this Tele in the club and a really gorgeous, cockeyed girl saunters up to you and asks what color it is, do not, I repeat- DO NOT say "Lake Placid Blue"...
