More than twenty-five years ago, in the earliest days of Fender’s Custom shop, when it was just a few guys stuck away in a corner of the Corona, California factory, we had a few runs of very custom Strats made for us, maybe three or four at a time, sometimes even with maple tops. This was a fairly radical idea at the time and they sold here like the proverbial hotcakes; for some reason or other our customers started calling them “Matt-o-Casters". One of these exceptional guitars has just come back to us from the family of its original owner and we’re thrilled to have it. It does indeed have a lightly figured maple top, a lightly figured maple neck to match, a beautiful black ebony fingerboard with matching black nut, abalone fingerboard inlays, and the early Fender Custom Shop logo on the back of the peghead. No idea what the pickups are but I trusted those guys implicitly at the time (and still do), which is just one part of why this guitar sounds so great. It has barely ever been played in the ensuing twenty-seven years, so the frets are perfect, the finish is perfect, and the guitar is, well, perfect. I don’t think they could build a guitar this gorgeous today for anywhere near this price, so here it is for some lucky person at only $2995 w/ohsc
