Up for sale is an incredibly cool 1964 Fender Custom Telecaster in what appears to be a very old sunburst refin, likely from the late 1960s or 1970s. I’ve always adored the Custom Telecaster model from the 1960s and this one right here is for the players! There are a lot of great things about this guitar, but first, let’s dive into the issues. As noted the body finish appears to have been re-done at some point in the guitars life, or at the least overs-prayed. What leads us to believe this is the deep areas of finish checking surrounding the body, neck pocket area, under the guard, etc (which is not typically seen on a factory finish), the lack of a body date, and the 3 nail holes (one on the neck cavity, one in the control cavity, and one in the bridge pickup cavity) showing paint in them. That said, the finish itself glows nice and green like you would expect an old finish to glow like. The neck finish is all original, as is the decal, with a date stamp of 3SEP63S. The guitar was refretted with similar size fret-wire, has a bone nut, and appeared to have had a different nut installed at one point that required removal of some of the rosewood behind the nut. This has been repaired, which was done well and is very easy to miss. Both pickups are original, as is the switch and wiring. The bridge pickup may have been potted at some point as it does not have the microphonic quality you would expect. Strangely, both pots date to 1968 leading us to believe they were either replaced at the time of the refin or replaced with “era correct” pots later down the line. The pickguard is the correct color and very well could be original, but is tough to say for certain. As previously noted the body shows correct dowel marks on the back and there are 3 nail holes present which Fender used up until the Fall of 1964. With that all said, this guitar is awesome and a hard-to-find model. Pro setup in-house and comes complete with its original hard case (with what appears to be aftermarket red interior).
