Retrofret Stock # 7707. Fender Jaguar Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1966), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 137802, black lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case. This beautiful early-CBS-era Jaguar shows only some light wear for its 50+ years on the planet and remains in superb playing condition. The instrument represents the top-of-the-line Fender guitar available in 1965-6...a Jaguar finished in black, which was a very rarely ordered Custom color in the mid-60's compared to the brighter-hued reds, whites and blues. This guitar was built just about two years after the Fender sell-out to CBS in January 1965, and is only minimally changed from a Pre-CBS example. The stamped neck date on this guitar is FEB 66 and the pots date to the 30th week of '65. The typical late '65-early '66 features include a bound fingerboard with pearloid dot inlay (recently changed from the earlier "clay" dots") but still the old style lacquer finish on the body and matching headstock. The gold transition logo headstock decal reads only "Fender" as is typical of black-finished instruments-so few were made it was not worth having a special decal in stock for them. The pickguard is the newer white ABS plastic unit used only on Custom-Color instruments. Even having undergone a revival of sorts in recent years the Jaguar remains a somewhat under-appreciated guitar with several interesting features. The scale length is shorter than other professional-grade Fender guitars at 24", a feature designed to enhance playability. The twin-circuit wiring and floating vibrato are shared with the Jaguar's ancestor, the Jazzmaster but the guitar actually feels and sounds quite different. The unique Jaguar pickups with the metal "claw" baseplate" are optimized for clarity and crispnessfactors that led to the guitar losing popularity in the late '60's as twang went out and distortion and crunch came in! Nevertheless this was the top-of-the line 60's Fenders and a very high quality guitar. With its gleaming black finish this is simply one of the coolest (and most badass slick looking) Jaguars we have had.Overall length is 40 in. (101.6 cm.), 14 in. (35.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 in. (610 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.). This is a well preserved guitar overall, with some light wear overall but all original finish and fittings. It has just been refretted with the period correct wire and so is an excellent player and ready for the next 50 years. There are some dings through the finish on the bottom edge, but the guitar presents very well with the gleaming black finish showing only some wear to the clear topcoat, mostly in the standard armwear area. There is one small shrinkage crack to the pickguard near the switch plate, visible but not affecting anything functionally. There are small spots of scratching and corrosion to the metal parts, most notable on the bridge cover, but nothing excessive. Overall a great playing example of a supremely sharp-looking Custom color Jaguar, complete in its original black Tolex hard case. Excellent Condition.
