1962 Fender Jazz Bass. This instrument features a body only refinish in authentic Nitro Lacquer 3 tone Sunburst by Fiesta Finishes™. Other than the body finish, the bass is all original, and happens to be the cleanest slab 3 knob we have ever seen. The original finish was stripped off, and a natural finish was left. For that reason, all original finish remains in the cavities, and you can see this in the photos, with the refinish matching the original finish precisely.
This model, produced in the early part of '62 is, in our opinion, the most desirable Jazz Bass. The combination of slab neck and 3 knob configuration, with a slightly bigger neck than earlier models, is, almost certainly, the best Jazz Bass. Sure, stack knobs are cool, but just a bit too fussy.
This bass is super clean. Gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard has no wear whatsoever, and is in mint condition. Original frets are perfect. The beautiful original Nitrate Tort guard shows almost no shrinkage, and certainly no damage or cracks, other than two very small holes next to the pickup for a moved finger rest.
We love refin instruments like this, which are all original, look as good or better than a similar original examples, at a fraction of the price. We cannot recommend this bass more highly.
The serial number is 74091. The bass weighs 8.9 lbs. The pots date to the very last week in December, 1961 with a code of 304 6152. I guess Stackpole was in full production the week after Christmas, '61! The neck dates to 1/62. The neck has a wonderful feel, not too thin down low, measuring .810" at 1st fret and 978" at 12th fret. The nut is right at 1.50". The original pickups measure 7.4K Ohms at the neck and 7.8K Ohms at the bridge.
The bass ships in a later, vintage Fender black Tolex, Jazz Bass case.
This bass is a joy to play, a handsome instrument that also sounds and plays wonderfully, with a great neck and perfect original pickups. You can pay a lot more for a bass that isn't nearly as good as this one!
