Summary: Introduced two years after the Mustang guitar, the Mustang Bass was the first student-level bass produced by Fender as well as the last production bass designed by Leo Fender before he left the company. Targeted towards younger players, the Mustang Bass offered a shorter 30-inch scale length as well as a lower price-point than the Precision or Jazz Basses of the mid-'60s. The split single-coil pickup was also smaller than that of the P Bass, but still captured a wide range of bass tones. Starting in 1969, Fender introduced a set of snazzy "competition" finishes which added a double racing stripe to the body. This particular Mustang bass is in fabulous shape but does show a fair amount of vintage charm. It has just been setup and restrung with a set of flat wound strings- it is playing and sounding beautiful.

Body: Offset solid alder body with competition red finish, yellow racing stripes and a 3 ply pearloid pickguard.

Neck: It has a 30” scale length maple neck with a rosewood veneer fretboard, pearloid dots, bone nut, matching headstock, end of heel truss rod adjustment and 1 9/16” nut width.

Pickups/Hardware: It has the original split single coil pickups, 1 volume, 1 tone, original nickel plated hardware and Fender stamped tuning keys.

Cosmetics: This bass is in lovely vintage condition. There’s finish checking on the body and headstock, a fair amount of minor chips and dings in the finish on the body, some buckle rash on the back, some wear through the finish on the neck, a couple small chips on the back of the neck and some finish chips around the edges of the headstock. There are some tooling marks in the neck pocket, possibly from someone trying to adjust the neck angle.  There is one note-worthy ding on the fretboard edge around the 3rd fret but overall this Mustang bass is in great vintage condition with no breaks, cracks or visible repairs.

Playability: Our in house luthier has just inspected, set up and restrung this bass with a new set of D’Addario Chromes flatwound strings and it is playing beautifully with low action and a straight neck. The frets are in great shape but there is some minor fret wear around the first few frets.
