Here is a nice early two tone sunburst Fender Precision bass from the transitional year of 1957 built in the Fullerton CA. plant.. Later in the year the Precision lost it's narrow headstock, huge white pickguard, single coil staggered pole pickup, and through body strings in favor of a strat like headstock, smaller anodized aluminum pickguard, split pickup with dual pole pieces, and strings routed through the tailpiece/bridge. This '57 bass has the date 5-57 along with #2 written in pencil on the end of the neck. Also in pencil written on the body under the pickup is the body date 3-57. The five digit serial number, 17264, with a dash in front is engraved on the four bolt chrome back plate. The contoured body appears to be alder although there is some figuring visible through the finish. It has a maple neck with a walnut backstripe and a fretboard with 20 original frets and 10 dot inlays. The neck scale is 34" and the nut width is 1 11/16". A Fender spaghetti logo with Fender Precision written below can be found on the narrow headstock along with a large string guide. Electronics include a black single coil pickup with staggered pole pieces and chrome volume and tone controls. Other features include a single ply white pickguard with nine screws that covers both horns, an original Fender Pat. Pend. metal bridge with two adjustment screws each for half of the strings, Kluson elephant ear tuners, and two nickel strap holders. Wiring, pots and pickup have been changed sometime before 1980. The pickup may be rewound or replaced and has plastic tape around it. Two of the gear screws and washers on the tuner keys have been replaced. The finger rest and pickup cover and bridge cover are missing. There is a tiny hole under the pickguard on the treble side of the bass. The lacquer on the back of the neck is worn off and the lacquer on the top and bottom ends of the fretboard shows hand wear. There are a few minor dings mostly on the bottom back edge of the bass. Overall the original two tone sunburst finish is in quite nice condition. The frets show some wear. They have a lot of life remaining. It has a comfortable, smooth, fast action neck. The pickup has big, clear open sound with nice tonal balance. This Fender Precision proves one pickup is all you need. It comes with a new tweed Fender Precision hardshell case with plush dark red lining.
