It doesn’t get much better than a pre-CBS Fender Stratocaster. This 1960 Fender Stratocaster is an excellent example of a pre-CBS slab-board strat, and interestingly, this one has been on the Western Slope of Colorado since 1961. Its original owner purchased the guitar at now-defunct Christiansen Music Co. in Grand Junction, Colorado—just a few hours away from Telluride. In addition to moonlighting in various western swing bands around the region, he played radio jingles live on the air for Western Slope radio stations, and this 1960 Stratocaster became his go-to guitar for the radio. After the first chord, it’s pretty easy to understand why because this strat is a tone monster. It is in excellent condition, too, with some repair history, but it has been beautifully maintained over the past 55 years. Its neck is dated November of 1960, and its body cavity is dated October of 1960. All three pots date from the 43rd week of 1960. It has a replacement tuner on the 4th string, a replacement nut, and retrofit pickguard screws, but otherwise all of the parts are original. The neck shows some signs overspray on the back, and there’s a small finish repair on the back of the guitar that looks like some tech’s answer to belt buckle rash. As for the magnetics, the neck pickup reads 6.05k ohms resistance, the middle reads 5.76k, and the bridge reads 5.79k. This one also includes some fun case candy—original hang tags, original strap and original cable—and the original case is in great shape. Ultimately, though, this is an incredible-sounding pre-CBS Stratocaster in excellent condition with the tone you’d expect, a good, playable setup and plenty of investment potential. It doesn’t get much better. Please call (970) 728-9592 or e-mail for an in-hand description.
