Incoming. With black guard Teles out of reach for most players (and many collectors), the next obvious choice is an early white guard. Here's what's different about an early 55 compared to a black guard 54...the guard and the color. Early 55's still have that huge neck profile (.94" at the first and 1.03" at the 12th). The flat pole bridge pickup stays around until mid 55. The string tree is still the round one. Oh, and about $15,000 worth of dollars. Is a black pickguard worth that much? Your call. These early 55's are currently undervalued, I think and will likely be swept up in the current market as black guard Teles reach past $60K and even $70K. This one is very clean-I'd call it an 8.5/10. There is much less neck wear than you usually see on these guitars. There is almost none. In fact, if not for some light flaking to the finish on the back, I'd be calling this a 9 easily. Neck date is 6/55. Body date is hard to read but looks like 5/55. Original ash tray with solder blob. No line Klusons. Flat pole bridge pickup and dome knobs. Frets appear to be original. Pot code (I can only read one) is 15th week of 55. The circuit is the stock "dark" circuit used from 53 on that doesn't allow both pickups at the same time. Easy to re-wire but I will leave it stock even if the third position is pretty useless. Case is a center pocket tweed and is original. The pocket is coming apart but the case is functional.
