Offered for your consideration is this "New Old Stock" GC50V-L by David Flammang. While offered for sale at an east coast dealer when first built in 2014, David loved the tone, but wasn't satisfied with the guitar's projection, so he took it back to his Greene, Iowa shop to tinker with as time permitted. He tells me he considered giving it a new top at one point, but instead opted to modify the bracing. He recently installed two 3/4" "exciter" braces on each side of the X-brace just north of the bridge. The results are amazing. Given the opportunity, I gladly snapped up this sweet piece for our inventory.
The GC50V-L is a 14-fret Grand Concert size instrument with a 25.4" string scale and an optional Venetian cutaway. It has a Port Orford Cedar top matched with very straight grained Indian Rosewood for the back and sides. The binding and trim are also made of Rosewood. The lovely multi-ring Rosette is a combination of Rosewood and Abalone. It has a sleek Honduran Mahogany neck with a depth of .83" at the first fret and a 1.75" bone nut. The fingerboard and belly-style bridge are made of Black Ebony. It has a bone saddle with 2-1/4" string spacing. A relatively simple, but extremely elegant design.
While this is only my second Flammang guitar (we also have a Flammang GC30 in stock as of this writing), I have quickly become a huge fan of David's work. While it is likely unfair to make such comparisons, his guitars remind me of the work of Michael Franks, another extremely talented craftsman who builds incredibe high quality instruments of classic design in very small quantities. This guitar plays with superb ease and is set up as it came from David with light gauge strings and 12th fret string heights of 5/64" on the low E side and 4/64" on the high E side.
The voice of this guitar will amaze you. It has a tone that is balanced, rich and full, as evidenced by the included sound sample. To my ear, even my lousy play cannot hide how good this guitar is. Even though I get to play some pretty fine instruments, the tone and playability of this guitar make it a standout to me.
While built in 2014 this guitar remains in near mint condition. It shows no flaws of any significance and the frets are spotless. It comes in a similarly nice high quality TKL case with green interior. David tells me that a new example of this guitar would cost you something close to $7.5K and a bit , but this near mint beauty can be yours at a significant discount.
If you are a finger-style player looking for an extremely high-quality, one-of-a-kind instrument at a fabulous price, this Flammang warrants your serious consideration. Nothing out there touches this guitar for anywhere near the price it is offered at here. Make it yours before I do!
