1954年にレスポールの上級機種として発売される、レスポール・カスタム。豪華な積層バインディングやゴールドパーツ等、贅沢な仕様で当時レスポール・ゴールドトップよりも100$以上高い金額で発表された上級機種です。1957年には、その後のギブソンサウンドを決定付けたと言っても過言では無いハムバッキングピックアップ、通称PAFがセス・ラバーとウォルター・フラーによって開発され、レスポール・カスタムにもハムバッキング・ピックアップが搭載される事で、現在でもおなじみのスタイルへとマイナーチェンジしていきます。
この1970-1972年製のレスポール・カスタムはナット裏付近にネック補強の為に設けられたボリュートを装備したナローな3ピースマホガニーネックや、マホガニー材の間にメイプル材を挟み込んだ通称パンケーキ・ボディ等の特徴。実際に使用される事でついた傷や使用感は、かっこいいだけとは違った重厚感と風格のある見た目。しっかりと目の詰まった良質なマホガニーボディやオリジナルのステッカードナンバードPAFから紡ぎ出されるヴィンテージ・レスポール・カスタムサウンドは幾重にも広がる倍音をまとい芳醇なサウンドを生み出しています。自分の様なハードロックおじさん達は歪ませてのサウンドに酔いしれる事は間違いの無い個体です。
