Description

This Gibson A-40 mandolin came to me from its original owner, who said he bought it new in 1961 and I believe him, even though the serial number dates to 1963, but those Gibson numbers were always somewhat elastic. The main thing is that it’s a really nice vintage Gibson mandolin, nice and clean, original finish, no top cracks, and a true bargain. At some point in its life there was a small separation of the back from the neck block, causing the action to come up somewhat. It was glued back in place by parties and at a time unknown; the work shows a bit. The result was a very slight upturn of the last few frets of the fingerboard, though the action height is still fine and there’s still room to adjust its original Brazilian rosewood Gibson compensated bridge. All it needs at this point is to have the last frets removed, the fingerboard end leveled, and those original frets put back in and you’re in business. The tuning machines are original, the tailpiece with its “Gibson” logo on its cover is intact, and fret wear is minimal. It even still has its original Gibson chipboard case. Offered as is. Yours for only $495 w/ossc
