1959 ES-335's get all the glory but lots of folks don't really know the difference between a 59 and a 60. The answer? The biggest difference is the price. Late 59's and early 60's are identical. A mid to late 60 has some changes from the earlier ones... slimmer neck profile, reflector knobs and double ring tuners. A 60 still has long magnet PAFs, no wire bridge and short seam lightweight stop tail. If you absolutely must have a huge neck, look for an early to mid year 59 or a 58. And expect to pay $15,000 to $20,000 more for it. It is worth noting that a 61 is not the same as a 60 but I won't get into that here because I'm not selling a 61. This mid to late 60 (probably late Summer) has definitely been played. It shows considerable player wear to the top around the f-hole and arm area. The top and back both have lots of checking. The neck shows only moderate to light wear and the fingerboard shows very little wear. The frets have been replaced and are excellent. Four of the tuner tips have been replaced. It shows the later 60 features but not the "blade" neck of the very late 60 and 61. Avoid that if you can. They can be trouble. First fret depth is .815". Twelfth fret depth is .885". That's pretty slim. Nut is full width at 1.70" (just over 1 11/16"). That's wider than most. Original long magnet PAFs with full stickers and measure 7.75 and 8.55K. The neck PAF is the 8.55K which is not unusual. Bridge PAF cover may have been off. Neck PAF cover definitely has not. Solder to the pots is original so we know it hasn't been rewound. Speaking of the pots, this 60 was lucky enough to get a 59 harness (47th week) which means bumblebee caps instead of the black beauties you will find on most 60 335's. Big fat tone with a neck pickup that isn't muddy at all and will drive your amp into Claptonesque tones with ease. The bridge pickup is medium/bright and well balanced. It is not harsh but it is aggressive. This guitar had some changed parts when I got it but they have all been replaced with vintage correct parts except for the tailpiece which is a high end Montreux short seam repro. This includes 1960 no wire ABR-1, reflector knobs and single line double ring Kluson tuners. The PAFs, harness, long guard, truss cover, catalin switch tip and case are original. I'd call the condition an 8- /10 based mostly on honest player wear. No repairs, no buckle rash, no cracks and plenty of checking. Weight is 7 lbs 12 ounces. Case is quite nice brown with pink lining Gibson badged 5 latch.
