Description

Summary: Introduced as a replacement for the slowly-waning ES-345, the Gibson ES-347 TD was produced between 1978 and 1991. Its semi-hollow body sported coil-tapping was generally brighter and had a far better sustain than others in the series due to a number of factors, including its brass nut. This 347 is a unique model and has tons of character.

Body: Dual cutaway semi-hollow design. Arched maple ply top, back and sides with center block. Bound top and back. F-holes. Gloss white nitrocellulose finish.

Neck: Three-piece maple set neck with volute. Bound ebony fingerboard with block inlays. Multi-ply bound headstock with “Gibson” and crown inlays. 1 11/16” nut width. 24 ¾” scale length.

Pickups/Hardware: Two Tim Shaw humbuckers. Gold hardware. Tune-o-matic bridge with stop tail piece. Gibson-branded Schaller tuners. Three way pickup selector. Two volume and two tone controls with black speed knobs. Coil tap switch on lower horn. Brass nut. Black multi-ply pickguard.

Cosmetics: There is extensive finish crazing, mainly on the horns and back of the guitar. There are small dings to the neck and headstock. There are four small holes around the bottom strap button from a previously mounted Bigsby. The gold hardware shows general fading. The once-white finish has aged all over to a banana cream yellow as was common with this finish. It’s a cool look with lots of mojo. The frets are in very good shape, with a little wear but plenty of life left.

Playability: This guitar plays great with low action and no buzz or dead spots. The neck has the wider, flatter carve of Gibsons in this era. The ebony board has fat frets and is smooth and fast. The tail piece is set low on the body and this seems to add a bit of ring and sustain to the tone. The pickups deliver hot, classic humbucker sound and the coil taps provide access to brighter sounds. A versatile player.

Mods/Repairs: At some point, a Bigsby was installed and later removed.

Weight: 8 lbs, 14 oz.

Case: Original hard shell.
