You really, really want a big neck 64 ES-335 but at $20,000 plus, it ain't happening. While the big neck stayed around until the Spring of 1965, big neck '65's have gotten kind of pricey too at $12K or more. The small neck version simply isn't going to do it for you. A 345 might be a good option but you really don't want to deal with the stereo or the Varitone circuit. Enter a true sleeper guitar. These are so rare, most folks don't know they exist. A 355 mono is exactly the same as a 335 except for the ebony fingerboard and some cosmetics (gold, fancy headstock, inlays and bindings, tortoise guard). Same circuit, same pickups, same pots, same build. And, most importantly, if you can find one of the 40 or so early '65 monos, the same neck profile. Nut width is just a whisker under 1 11/16" at 1.65"-same as most 64 335's. Depth at the first fret is .825" and .98" at the 12th. It has some minor issues. It had different tuners but now has vintage correct Kluson wafflebacks-no extra holes. The saddles have been changed from nylon to metal. The pickup covers have been changed. It has been correctly drilled for a stop tail. The studs and tailpiece are included. They are vintage 60's. I covered the bushings with a repro "Custom Made" plate which is what the factory would have done had they offered this configuration in the 355. It is held by velcro rather than nails-I didn't want to make any holes. Pickups are patent number. One is missing it's sticker but since I replaced the covers, I was able to check that it was a pre T and that it had never been re-wound. Condition is 9/10 with no visible wear. Frets are original and at 90+%. Case is a vintage Lifton. This is a wonderful player both with the Maestro and set up for stop tail. Pickups measure 8.1K and 7.6K.
