Description

This 1920 Gibson F4 Mandolin serial number 62114, in Sunburst, is in very good condition with original hard case. This is a non truss rod instrument and as such features the large flower pot on the headplate. A back split has been professionally repaired and touched up prior to our acquiring the instrument. The pick guard is deteriorating from age. This F4 shows ordinary signs of playing including the expected number of minor dings, and small scratches etc, that accompany its age and usage. The frets are in great shape.

This elegant Florentine fantasy is constructed of a figured maple back and carved spruce top with an ebony fingerboard inlaid with 6 mother of pearl dot position markers. Tuners from this period are four-on-a-plate with two lines of filigree on the back of each plate, and the tuner buttons are amber colored.

An F-4 mandolin is crème ivoroid bound on both top and back, has crème ivoroid binding on three sides of the fingerboard including around the five partial frets on the cantilevered fingerboard extension, and a crème bound headstock that features “The Gibson” inlayed in script mother of pearl. Its oval soundhole is bound in crème ivoroid and surrounded by a three ring rosette, the 2 outer rings being “rope” wood marquetry bordered on each side in black. The bridge is ebony, and “The Gibson” tailpiece cover, with floral pattern remains present.

This wonderful mandolin is extremely beautiful and produces a rich, full sound.

If you have ever craved for an early Gibson mandolin, don't let this one get away!
