Gibson J-45, 1954. The Slope Shouldered J-45 has been one of Gibson’s most popular guitars throughout the decades. Post WW II the J-45 remained basically unchanged from the mid-1940’s thru 1954 featuring a Dark Sunburst Triple bound Spruce Top with tall, thin, scalloped X bracing placed 1” behind the soundhole. The back braces were also tall and thin. Mahogany back and sides, Mahogany neck, Mahogany neck block, Rosewood fingerboard, Rosewood belly-bridge with long saddle, and a small teardrop “tortoise” pickguard, the desirable 19 frets with a short scale length of 24.75”, nut width of 1 11/16” ( I measured 3 times) and a neck profile with some substance but not huge. In 1955 the J-45 design changes included: shorter non-scalloped top bracing, a larger pointed pickguard and 20 frets, by 1956 the adjustable bridge/saddle had been added. This 1954 J-45 is a prime example of the last year prior to these changes now considered less desirable were made. Condition: Very Good – Excellent, The only replacements I see are a strap button on the neck, newer tuning gears and a newer saddle. It has your typical Gibson finish checking but not bad at all, showing light scratches, light pings, and light playwear, “2” stamped back of headstock. The frets and fingerboard show minimum wear. One glued hairline crack from soundhole to bridge at top of pickguard, must look very very close to see. The bridge at some point lifted and pulled forward on a small area of the finish in front, bridge professionally reglued. NO Cracks on the back, sides, neck, headstock or anything of the sort. Super clean guitar inside and out, superb playability and meets all my expectations of an old Gibson J-45. Structurally sound and ready for another 62 years of enjoyment. Newer hardshell case.
