1965 Gibson J-50 SN. 355493

This one-owner guitar was purchased new at a Lyon & Healy retail location in the 60s and played 'only occasionally' early in the original owner's tenure of ownership. The guitar is in excellent condition with little wear, only a few slight dings to the finish (detailed below). The guitar is 100% original inside and out, no cracks or damage, no repairs evident and none needed. Gotta love that the heel hasn't even been drilled for a strap button! The back of the headstock, in addition to the serial number, has a number "2" stamped in the lacquer. Of course, the common assumption is that this is a factory marking designating the guitar as a 'second'...if that is the case, I can't find the issue that caused it to receive the stamp...I can find no flaw, cosmetic/structural or otherwise that would cause the guitar to be designated a second. Some interesting reading can be found on the web regarding that little "2", some suggesting that many guitars so stamped had no issues...but I digress. Back to the guitar. The mahogany back and sides show light crazing in the lacquer, and the bass side shows light abrasion to the lacquer on the lower bout from rubbing on the inside of the case latch hardware (see pic). This abrasion is not through to the wood beneath. The top finish is very clean, no play wear but crazing to the lacquer. The neck has two small lacquer dings (see photos). The frets are in excellent condition (frets were just leveled and re-crowned and the fret board cleaned). The neck is straight under tension and the truss rod functions properly. All interior bracing is secure and original, bridge plate is in good shape. The nut width is Gibson's slender 1 9/16", great for smaller hands and skinny fingers. The action measures 6/64" at the low E at the 12th fret and 5/64" at the high E with plenty of downward adjustability left in the saddle. Action is low and comfortable, plays with good intonation and no buzz. Loud and jangly with a tumpy bass end. Comes with the original chip board case. $4250
