In 1923, Gibson abandoned the pin trapeze bridge in favor of a standard design with a metal cross bar that anchored the strings. This 1923 L-4 also features the single floating pickguard support located near the middle of the pickguard. The pickguard design on this model is also considerably slimmer than earlier examples. Thaddeus McHugh?s patent for his truss rod design was finally granted on February 27, 1923. That may explain why this 1923 L-4 features a metal truss rod cover, which boldly calls attention to itself by contrasting with the black headstock overlay.
